How Long Does a CSLB Application Take?
Updated October 29, 2026
Short answer: nobody can promise you a date, including us. CSLB updates its processing times page every week to show which application dates it is currently working on. That is a snapshot of the queue, not a finish date for your application.
The steps after you apply
- CSLB reviews the application. If anything is missing it comes back to you for correction.
- Once accepted ("posted"), CSLB sends exam scheduling (unless the exam is waived) and fingerprint instructions.
- After you pass, CSLB asks for the bond, workers' comp or exemption, and the initial license fee.
- The license issues once everything, including DOJ and FBI fingerprint results, is in.
Deadlines that void an application
- 90 days to send back a corrected application after CSLB returns it. After that it is void and the fee is lost.
- 18 months from acceptance to pass the exams. After that the application is void and you start over with new fees.
Checking your own file
CSLB's Application Status Check uses your Application Fee Number and PIN to show what date CSLB is working on for your type of application.
How to keep it moving
The fastest application is the one that is not returned. Specific experience descriptions, matching names, and the right classification avoid most delays. See 8 reasons CSLB rejects applications.
