CSLB License Renewal: Fees, Deadlines, and What Blocks a Renewal

Updated October 30, 2026

Active California contractor licenses renew every two years, and inactive licenses every four. CSLB mails the renewal application about 60 days before expiration. If you do not have it 45 days out, you can order one, and it is still your responsibility to renew either way.

What it costs

RenewalSole ownerOther entities
Active, on time$450$700
Active, late$675$1,050
Inactive, on time$300$500
Inactive, late$450$750

C-10 Electrical adds $20 to active renewals. CSLB may also collect unpaid Industry Expert Recovery Fees at renewal.

Online or paper

CSLB's online renewal is for licenses with one qualifier. Licenses with more than one qualifier mail or hand deliver the form. Active licensees with a workers' comp policy certify their three highest-payroll class codes.

If you are late

An acceptable renewal must reach CSLB before the expiration date to avoid unlicensed time. After that, the delinquent fee applies, and work done while expired counts as unlicensed. CSLB must reinstate retroactively if a complete renewal arrives within 90 days of expiration (SB 1474). You can renew up to five years after expiration; after that you need a new application.

What blocks a renewal

  • A change in business entity, such as sole owner to corporation: you apply for a new license.
  • A new Secretary of State registration number: new license.
  • A new owner of a sole owner license, or new general partners: new license.
  • A corporation suspended at the Secretary of State: clear that first.
  • A corporate name that does not match the Secretary of State record.

If CSLB sends it back

You have 90 days from the date of CSLB's letter to return an acceptable renewal, and if the license expires meanwhile you owe the delinquent fee. So check your status online after you file: CSLB says verifying it was received and processed is your responsibility.
