CSLB License Suspended? What It Means and How to Clear It
Updated October 30, 2026
You cannot contract for work with a suspended license. CSLB's record shows the reason on its License Check page, and more than one suspension can apply at a time, so read it closely. Here is how CSLB says each kind is cleared.
Contractor bond
A bond suspension usually means the surety cancelled the bond. CSLB says the surety can send a rescission of the cancellation, or you get a new bond and submit it within 90 days of its effective date or of the old bond's cancellation. The business name and license number on the bond must match CSLB's records exactly. CSLB says that once a bond is processed, the suspension is lifted retroactively to the bond's effective date.
Workers' compensation
If the policy was cancelled, the insurer sends CSLB a reinstatement notice. If it expired, the insurer sends a renewal notice. If you have no covered employees, you submit an exemption instead. You are not eligible for the exemption with any employees, including home improvement salespersons or an RME, or if you hold C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39, or D-49.
No qualifier
If an RMO or RME leaves and is not replaced within 90 days, CSLB suspends the license or removes the classification. CSLB can grant one 90-day extension on written request. See How to replace an RMO or RME.
LLC insurance and worker bond
LLC licenses must keep a $100,000 employee/worker bond and liability insurance on file. Each is its own requirement, so check both.
Judgments and unpaid liabilities
For a civil judgment, CSLB says to pay it in full or submit a written payment agreement signed by you and the creditor. For outstanding liabilities, submit proof of resolution to CSLB's Judgment Unit. Those take more than a form, so talk to someone before spending money on a fix.
Can I still renew?
CSLB says a suspended license, with limited exceptions, can be renewed as active or inactive. If you renew active, you are not in good standing and do not get a pocket card until the suspension clears.
Is there a fee to clear a suspension?
CSLB's suspension page lists no fee for clearing a bond or workers' comp suspension. You will pay the surety or insurer for any new bond or policy.
