What you need
- Where you worked in the last 10 years, with dates and specific duties
- Someone who personally saw the work, for each employer
- Secretary of State number, for a corporation or LLC
- Date of birth, home address, and driver license number for the qualifier and everyone listed
Rules worth knowing
Experience
The qualifier needs at least four years at journeyman level or higher, in the classification, within the last 10 years.
One classification at a time
You apply for one classification, then add others after CSLB issues the license.
After you apply
CSLB accepts the application, sends a Notice to Schedule an Examination, and gives you 18 months to pass. After that it asks for the initial license fee, bonds, workers' comp, and fingerprints.
Common questions
Does the $399 include CSLB's fee?
No. CSLB's $450 application fee is a separate line, paid to CSLB at cost. The initial license fee ($200 sole owner, $350 other entities) comes later, once you pass.
Do you sell exam prep?
No. We prepare and file the paperwork. CSLB publishes study guides for its exams.
Can I e-sign everything?
No. CSLB requires original signatures on the Certification of Work Experience, and everyone listed signs under penalty of perjury. We send you the forms.
How long does it take?
CSLB sets its own processing times and posts them weekly, so we never promise a date. CSLB's acknowledgment letter usually arrives in 4 to 6 weeks.
